Man has been harnessing energy in traditional forms. however a large scale harnessing is a recent phenomenon, which started in the third quarter of the 20th centuary. Solar Energy is used directly as in Solar water heaters, solar cookers,solar furnace, solar chargers, solar cells and other solar powered products. Indirectly, it is used in nature. It is converted into chemical energy by plants. This chemical energy is used by animals as food. Solar energy also changes into wind energy, energy of flowing water, the energy of tides and sea waves. In this form it is harnessed by watermills or windmills either in the form of mechanical energy or electric energy.
Solar cooker, solar cooker(spherical reflector type), solar furnace, solar water heatyer, are all solar heating devices. Solar cells, solar pannels are used for electricity productions.
solar cookers can raise a temperature of about 100 degree celsius to 140 degree celsius. This temperature is sufficient to cook food and can be attained within three or four hours.
In solar reflectors thousands of small plane mirrors are arranged in the form of a curve, so as to make a huge spherical concave reflector. A crucible is fixed at the focus of the concave reflector. The materials to be melted are placed inside this crucible. the temperature in this cruxcible rises to around 3000 degree celsius, which is sufficient to melt most of the materials.
Solar water heaters, like all the other solar products are environmental friendly source of heating. they are used in big hotels, hospitals and industries. Solar cells, also called photo voltaic cells converts light energy into electrical enaergy, due to the generation of potential difference. They are economical and can be used in sattelites.
