Reliability is important when considering options for a power source. Systems technology is constantly improving and presently there are good systems available that can take a homeowner off the utility grid and provide uninterrupted power. The cost of maintenance is very low. Some components of the system may last decades without any maintenance at all. Solar panels are durable and simply constructed. Under normal conditions they can last up to twenty five years with no more than a 20% loss in efficiency. Other parts will require more maintenance, but with proper care there should be no maintenance costs at all for the first five years.

Solar power systems are safe and uncomplicated. Because they are so safe there is no need for government supervision or regulation. The cost for maintenance to these systems is very low. The initial cost of installing a system, however, would be several thousand dollars. Without a backup system the usefulness of a solar power system is dramatically diminished on cloudy days and especially at night when people are most in need of power. It would be necessary to stay on the power grid or purchase a rechargeable generator. If people are unable to afford this financial outlay, then it would be easier for them to obtain their power from the utility companies.

Progress is never easy and sometimes people would rather tolerate the status quo instead of enduring the inconvenience and unfamiliarity of change. Perhaps if those in power would be more willing to embrace the things that would create a more harmonious existence, then maybe they would provide incentives that will make it easier for people to weather the changes.
